It protects the liquidity of the asset when you decide to sell, rebalance, or pass it on.
No single check is sufficient for every bar. The most reliable approach combines dealer documentation, physical inspection, precise measurements, and professional testing when the value or uncertainty justifies it.
Start With the Bar’s Source and Documentation
The strongest verification begins before the bar reaches your hands. Purchase from an established bullion dealer that identifies the refinery, weight, purity, and product format clearly, and that has a defined buyback or Sell To Us process. A dealer willing to repurchase recognized products has a direct interest in authenticating what it sells.
Look for bars from widely recognized refiners and sovereign mints. Their products usually follow consistent specifications for dimensions, markings, finish, and packaging. A tungsten-based counterfeit may match the weight more closely, but its dimensions, internal structure, or sound response can still reveal a problem.
Measurements work best when they are used together. A bar with the correct weight but incorrect thickness is not verified. Likewise, a bar with accurate dimensions that weighs too little should not be accepted as investment-grade gold.
Use Basic Tests Carefully
A magnet test is quick and non-destructive. Gold is not magnetic, so a strong attraction to a magnet is an immediate reason to stop the transaction. However, no magnetic attraction does not confirm gold. Many counterfeit metals are also non-magnetic.
Some investors use a sound or “ping” test, particularly with coins. Gold has a distinct, sustained tone compared with many base metals, but bar shape, size, and protective packaging affect the result. This method may be less practical for sealed bars and may not expose a sophisticated tungsten counterfeit with a gold outer layer.
Do not use acid testing, filing, drilling, or cutting on a bar you intend to keep in original condition. Such methods can damage the product, compromise tamper-evident packaging, and reduce buyer confidence at resale. They are generally unnecessary when professional non-destructive testing is available.
When Professional Testing Is the Right Decision
For larger bars, unfamiliar brands, private-party purchases, or any transaction that raises doubts, professional testing is the prudent choice. Reputable bullion dealers and specialized assayers may use X-ray fluorescence, ultrasound, electrical conductivity testing, or a combination of methods.
X-ray fluorescence, often called XRF, analyzes the metal at the surface and can confirm the composition of the outer layer. It is fast and non-destructive, but surface analysis alone may not reveal a plated counterfeit with a different interior. Ultrasound testing helps assess internal consistency by sending sound waves through the bar. Combining XRF with ultrasound, accurate weight, and dimension checks offers much stronger protection than any single method.
This is where recognized, sealed bullion products can have a practical advantage. Some modern minted bars include verification features such as serialized assay cards, security patterns, or digital authentication systems. These features add friction for counterfeiters, but they should still be checked through the refiner’s established process and never treated as infallible.
Preserve the Bar’s Resale Value After Verification
Once a bar has passed inspection, protect its condition and its chain of custody. Store it in its original assay card or protective sleeve when applicable. Keep invoices and verification records together, and avoid handling the bar unnecessarily. Fingerprints, scratches, bent packaging, and missing documentation may not change the gold content, but they can make resale slower or lead a buyer to require extra testing.
